Body & Soul
by Betty
I am not a supermodel. I will never be a size 2, or even a size 8, for that matter. I have spent hours of my life in front of a mirror poking my poochy belly and wishing that all of that chub would migrate somewhere more desirable... like my booty, for example, since I suffer from a lack thereof.
These insecurities held me back (and still occasionally creep up on me) from being a happy girl. I am red-handed guilty of nit-picking apart my body until I had forgotten the purpose of it.
Focusing on your exterior takes away from the value of what it means to have a body. The body is part of your soul. Doctrine and Covenants 88:15 it makes it pretty clear when it states, “The spirit and body are the soul of man…” (Or woman too, in any case.) There are a million different ways to define the importance of a soul. In many world religions the soul is what sets man and woman apart from any other bit of nature. We know through the truth of the gospel that we are divine in nature, and that every soul is important. This means literally that every body is important to the Lord.
I am here to tell you right now, there is nothing wrong with being thick. There is nothing wrong with having bodacious curves. There is nothing wrong with being thin. There is nothing wrong with not having curves either. There is nothing wrong with being very short, or very tall. Every body was hand-crafted by God Himself, in His likeness, with perfect precision. I use the word perfect because “perfect,” when translated into the Hebrew context, means “complete” or “whole.” The Lord doesn’t make mistakes, and He purposefully made your body perfect.
When you look in the mirror and see your “flaws”, remember that they're what set you apart from the masses. They set you apart from every airbrushed, Photoshopped celebrity out there.
Humans are constantly seeking the black and white answers, when they should be seeing the area between. The media and society have succeeded in creating the black and white image of what defines beauty, and have subtracted the grey area.
Sisters, there is only grey area when it comes to beauty, because all women are made beautiful in their own way.
Please don’t let your insecurities make you weak. I have witnessed how a poor self-image can wreak havoc on a relationship. When your husband, boyfriend, fiancée, or date tells you, “You are beautiful.” Don’t roll your eyes or quickly say, “No, I’m not.” Whether you believe it yet or not, you truly are.
Give your soul a little more credit. Give your body more credit. Silence those annoying little voices in your head that make you afraid to love yourself. Start today to see yourself with the beauty that Lord would see you. Give yourself a pat on the back, because you are perfect.
