Your Body In A New Light
by Nia
Do me a favor.
Hold up your hand and take a good look at it. Check out the lines on your palm and the tendon ridges on the back. Open and close it a few times. Stretch it out flat, then relax completely and let it curl in on itself.
Pretty cool, huh?
Hands are amazing. They're complicated but simple all at the same time, beautiful and useful all at once. Your hands are incredible pinnacles of creation, and they're all yours.
Now, take a glance down at the rest of your body. You'll probably have some conflicted, weird, or uncomfortable feelings when you do this. Most women do. A critical voice may pop into your head, telling you that you need to start exercising, or that your belly is pudgy. Or maybe your inner voice is approving, and thinks that you've really lost weight and toned your abs. Maybe it's proud of you for being able to fit into those size 8 jeans. Maybe it thinks you're almost perfect but really need a tan.
Whatever that inner voice says, listen politely. Let it have its say. Then ignore it, because I want you to look at your body in a whole new light for the next couple minutes.
Your body, like your hand, is an incredible marvel of engineering. On a most basic level, you're made up of a bunch of proteins and acids. One step up, and you're all tissue and bone. Another step up, and those building blocks come together to create a skeleton and muscles, and those form groups and work together to create a body. And that body, which is intimately connected with the spirit it houses, lets you do amazing things, like thinking, breathing, dancing, and making love.
You are an entire universe. You are comprised of thousands of colonies of cells working together for your greater good. You are infinity packed into a single organism. You, in short, are a miracle.
Look back down. You see that belly pudge, or that stretch mark, or that insert-thing-that-makes-you-insecure-here? Look at it again. Think about how all those tiny cells have banded together to work for you.
Those fat cells? They're doing their best to keep you warm and to give you energy to live on if you're ever in a situation where food isn't an option. Those stretch marks? They jumped in to help hold down the fort and keep you in one piece when your skin was being stretched too fast. Every little part of your body exists for a reason, so give yourself a break. And remember, the incredible universe that is you was designed by a master Creator who knew exactly what he was doing.
