Why Is Sex Important In a Mormon Marriage?
by Nia
We know we're supposed to have sex (and most of us think it's a pretty good idea)... but why is sex such an important part of marriage? Here are a few ideas:
1. Physical intimacy helps you be the best wife you can be.
Marriage is sacred. And we women have a sacred responsibility to be the best wives we can possibly be. Think of it this way: As a wife, you're learning all kinds of new skills, from how to communicate with a man to the art of compromise to how to feed the two of you and pay the rent all in the same month. Sex is another skill that helps you become a good wife who knows how to take care of her husband's needs... and lets him take care of hers.
2. Sex makes your home happier.
Sex gets feel-good chemicals moving in your body. That puts you in a better mood. And if you're in a good mood, guess what that's going to do for your husband's overall happiness? As the saying goes, "If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!" But if Mama is happy... well, that carries over to the whole house, and if you find yourself humming "Love at Home" for no good reason, you'll know why.
3. Physical intimacy leads to emotional intimacy.
You know those feel-good chemicals I just mentioned? One of them is called oxytocin, and this powerful hormone will bond you to your husband with more power than extra-strength superglue. Oxytocin is released into your bloodstream during sexual arousal, and it can both relax you and help you feel emotionally connected to your husband. We're talking major husband-related warm fuzzies... and what's not to love about that?
4. It's a fun form of exercise.
Sex burns calories. Your mileage may vary, but some physical therapists have calculated that sex (with you on top) can burn around 90 calories in 30 minutes. It can't quite compete with going for a long run... but it's a lot more fun. And since regular exercise can help combat depression... See point #2 above.
5. I'll let this speak for itself.
Sexual relations within marriage are divinely approved not only for the purpose of procreation, but also as a means of expressing love and strengthening emotional and spiritual bonds between husband and wife. - LDS Church Handbook of Instructions, 1998
Physical intimacy between husband and wife is beautiful and sacred. It is ordained of God for the creation of children and for the expression of love within marriage. - True to the Faith
That pretty much says it all.
